Scope of Work: Executive Director,

Doula Alliance of Arkansas

The Doula Alliance of Arkansas (DA-AR) seeks a dynamic, engaged Executive Director consultant to advocate for access to high-quality doula services through policy, systems change, and member engagement. The Executive Director will be committed to working collaboratively to improve maternal health outcomes in Arkansas, especially for women and families disproportionately impacted by maternal morbidity and mortality. 

  1. The Executive Director (hereafter, referred to as ED) of the Doula Alliance of Arkansas (DA-AR) will be a part-time independent contractor managing all aspects of DA-AR. The Arkansas Community Foundation is the fiscal sponsor of DA-AR. 

  2. The ED is accountable to the DA-AR Board of Directors and will report to the DA-AR Board President. Applicable laws, the bylaws of the organization, and the contract will govern the terms and conditions of the work.

  3. The ED will be responsible for day-to-day operations and implementing the policies and programs of the DA-AR as established by the Board of Directors. 

Contractor Responsibilities

  1. The primary function of the ED will be to carry out the vision, mission, and strategic plan of the organization, as expressed through bylaws, policies, resolutions and actions of the Board of Directors.

  2. It is an important duty of the ED to balance various roles, duties and responsibilities to the different constituencies of the organization. These may include but are not limited to:

    1. External relations and partnership-building

    2. Advocacy and lobbying

    3. Communications

    4. Public speaking

    5. Strategic planning

    6. Board engagement and leadership development

    7. Membership recruitment, benefits and services including continuing education and doula training and certification

    8. Project management

    9. Office management

    10. Management of additional DA-AR contractors

    11. Accounting and finance

    12. Grant management

    13. Fundraising (grants and donations) 

  3. The ED will have an annual review with the President of the Board of Directors, during which he/she will be accountable to key performance indicators jointly set by the Board and ED.

Contracts and contractors

  1. The ED has oversight for other contractors working with DA-AR, subject to oversight and general direction by the Board. ED will recommend to the Board, for their approval, the engagement of other contractors, such as attorneys, accountants, and those engaged from time to time to provide specialized advice to the Board.

  2. The ED, in consultation with legal counsel and/or other expert professional advice, must review all contracts to which the organization is a party before recommending approval by the Board. 

Travel

  • The ED can expect to spend no more than 10 percent of time traveling.  Travel may include travel within Arkansas to meet with doulas, document success stories, support policy events, or participate in relevant meetings.  Occasional out-of-state travel may be required. Travel expenses are reimbursable; the ED must provide his/her own transportation.

Weekly Hours  

The ED will work, on average, 20 hours per week.  Required hours may vary. This is a contract position and does not include benefits. 

Annual Salary

$50,000 per year

Required Qualifications

  • Five years of experience in health care, public health, or related setting

  • Health care policy and finance, public health, or related work experience

  • Experience working with or serving on nonprofit boards

  • An understanding of the role of doulas

  • Must live in Arkansas

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or 5 years experience in health care.

  • Experience in maternal health, pediatric health, or preconception health. 

  • Experience as a parent or caregiver.

  • Experience in nonprofit management

  • Advocacy or lobbying

  • Member organization leadership
